From the 17th of September 2023, there will be a default speed limit of 20 miles per hour across restricted roads in Wales - restricted roads being roads that are in residential and crowded areas.
Wales will be one of the first countries in the world, and the first nation in the United Kingdom to introduce legislation to make a mandatory 20mph speed limit on roads where vehicles, cyclists and those walking mix.
Ministers have reported that these speed limits are expected to reduce road collisions and noise, as they aim to encourage more people to walk or cycle. The Welsh government have said that the being made is set to reduce the number of collisions and vehicle-related injuries and, in turn, will have less of an impact on NHS staff as they would not have to spend time treating those who have been in injuries from a collision. The benefits hat could come from this is great as it will encourage more people to walk and cycle and try to improve health and well-being, thus making the roads safer and safeguarding the environment for future generations.
The latest police data shows that half of the injuries, which would be 5,570, that people face after being in a collision occurred on a 30mph road. The statistics have also shown that In Wales of the 1,131 people who have been severely injured or killed, 40% of these incidents occurred in 30mph zones.
The first eight communities that were selected to try out the first phase of settlements to introduce the 20mph speed limits are:
- St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire
- Llanelli North, Carmarthenshire
- St Brides Major, Vale of Glamorgan
- Central North, Cardiff
- Cilfrew Village, Neath Port Talbot
- Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
- Severnside, Monmouthshire
- Buckley, Flintshire
The results of this has shown that the overall speed of the area had reducedk, and that drivers were slowing more for the pedestrians and cyclists around.
The capital has also adopted this approach as a new speed limit of 20mph is to be introduced in the London boroughs of Camden, Islington, Hackney, Haringey and Towel Hamlets from March 31, 2023.
Another reason fot the implementation of this 30mph speed limit is Transport for London report, that this change will reduce the severity of the accidents that occur and increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The Lower speed limit would allow drivers more time to react in an unexpected situation on the road. The lower speeds could also positively impact the environment by reducing emissions and noise pollution. There are also areas where these speed limits are being implemented in response to the local communities who are concerned about road safety.
The adaptation of these speed limits may vary with individual counties and local authorities. Some of the places that will be implementing these speed limits include London, Greater Manchester, West Midlands, Merseyside, Avon and Somerset, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Cardiff. In many of these locations, the restriciton will apply in the city centre and many residential roads.
