It was announced today that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will be the first automaker to join BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye in making an autonomous driving platform for global deployment.

FCA will bring more technical resources, engineering, sales volumes and geographic reach to the partnership.

FCA Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne, said: “Joining this cooperation will enable FCA to directly benefit from the synergies and economies of scale that are possible when companies come together with a common vision and objective.”

The original partnership formed in July 2016 with a goal to start production of fully automated driving by 2021. 40 autonomous test vehicles are on schedule to deploy on the road by the year-end.
